IN THE GARDEN
Roselle Hibiscus, A.K.A Florida Cranberry

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, I wanted to share a unique Florida recipe with a plant you can grow right in your backyard! Going by many names,(Roselle, Jamaican Sorrel, and Florida Cranberry), it’s a type of hibiscus with fairly simple white flowers that thrives here. While much of the plant is edible, the calyx is the most prized part.
In Jamaica, it’s used to make a festive, spiced Christmas drink. My mailman is Jamaican and was sent home with two bag fulls of calyces after chatting with me about making the drink with his family when he was young.
Early Florida settlers cultivated the plant as a cranberry substitute. The calyces have a very similar tang and can be used in your Thanksgiving cranberry sauce recipes! I’ll be up to my ears in extra seeds from this year’s harvest, so if you’re interested in planting some Roselle, reply to the email and I’ll be happy to share some!

Wildflower Ice Cream: A Family Ice Cream Shop for All

Last week, as part of a series of upcoming local business spotlights, I sat down with Steve McGarry, owner of Wildflower Ice Cream—one of our favorite ice cream spots in town. Having a dairy allergy, I’m a huge fan of their coconut-based vanilla and array of dairy-free toppings that let me create different flavors each time I visit.
Owners Steve and Sarah moved from the San Francisco Bay Area 3 years ago to be closer to family. Steve, a tech industry veteran, knew he wanted to try a new challenge in brick & mortar, but wasn’t positive which business to open. After the local classic, Dairy Inn, closed down, everything clicked, and Wildflower was on its way.
Motivated by their children's dairy sensitivities, Steve and Sarah knew they wanted accessible ice cream to be a core part of the shop. The solution came from his wife, Sarah, who recalled the specialized machines used for New Zealand ice cream from her favorite childhood shop.

Unlike traditional soft serve that requires separate machines or lengthy changeover processes to make dairy free ice cream, these machines allow the staff to start with a non-dairy base and achieve the same texture and appearance as a dairy scoop. Whether you end up using their regular vanilla/chocolate base, or the dairy-free, you have complete control to make any flavor combination you can dream up!

One of the other things I love about Wildflower is their collaborations with local businesses in the area (Pete’s Bagels, Golden Isles, Halelife, Cafe Clementine, Look Alive, Ritual Grounds, Noble Nectar, Howsyourday, and more). Even the shop's logo and menus were designed by Kelly Packard from Look Alive and Sara Peterman from Pete’s Bagels. Steve shared with me some upcoming news and more collaborations that I won’t spoil here yet, but I think the community will be very excited!
I highly recommend you stop by the shop for some great ice cream made by great people. Show this newsletter at the register to get 15% off your order!
